"Hamburg, 1981.

"Where have you come from, where are you going? The River Weser at Horstedt in Lower Saxony, with porcelain tableware floating on it, gliding on its way to the North Sea. My granduncle’s house lies in the swamp behind the dyke on the other side of the river. In the front a place for mooring with a bell to call the ferryman, who then rowed over and picked us up. During the crossing, we had to scoop out the water that was entering through the gaps in the hull. None of us were able to swim. I can still hear our “Hellos” from back then reverberate within me, like those from Dreyer’s Vampyr. That was also the place from where I wanted to launch my handmade wooden crate so I could travel downstream, drifting around Europe and then along the African coast in the Atlantic all the way to Cameroon. From there, I would proceed on foot to the Sahara. Cameroon was also the name of the huge sand dunes close to our house that were carted away in the 50s for the reconstruction of Bremen. An epithet that was just another expression of the same Wilhelmine insanity that pervaded everything." (From: arsenal, october 16).

"Chicago, April 2nd, 1998. A self-portrait as an old man in the bathroom of The Claridge Hotel on the last stop on this year’s tour of the USA. My naked father looking back at me in the mirror. The slides for the show burnt up in the Art Institute’s projector the night before – like the first shot of the film Normalsatz at its premiere at the Delphi Filmpalast in Berlin on February 16, 1982. I collapsed from exhaustion beneath the Louis H. Sullivan arches that have been put up again on Monroe Drive – the last remains of his 1984 Chicago Stock Exchange Building that was torn down in 1972. In May 2002, we filmed these ruins from a dolly for Miscellanea III. Above and below, the positive and negative of the symbol of a ladder copied by hand in slightly distorted fashion from the wall of a storage shed in Hamburg harbor in 1975. In the middle, a piece of original border fence that is to be put up again in an East German nostalgia park, somewhere in 'complete' Germany. A changing of the guards is very much the order of the day." (From: arsenal, february 15).

"Europe in the grip of an iron glove. Fourteen silver spoons drifting out of the picture to the West, and, in the opposite direction, from America, a long-stemmed garden rake scratching my father's forehead. The iron hand carrying Europe in its claws was the symbol of Bolshevism for the specialist magazine of the US Marines. Who is grabbing after whom here? The effort to anchor personal guilt and atonement in this roundelay of world history, into which one was born, became a utopian endeavour. Only one thing was clear: The 'miracle' in the German term Economic Miracle was not the economy, according to which destruction is still always the best precondition for regaining power, but the souls of the survivors that continued to be economically active in an unmoved fashion. The term celebrates the coldness of survival, which was then passed on to us children. To break this chain is regarded as a crime against 'nature', of which the Nazis had already made their atrocious rhyme and reason." (From: Schwarze Blöcke, SchwarzHandPresse 2010).

"Leonid Ilyich Brezhnev at the end of the 1970s in his situation room in the Kremlin in front of two running TV programs. No signs of sensory overload or existence as a vegetable yet. A set of kitchen knives along with a meat fork, meat chopper, and sharpening steel falling in from the East. The toggle fastener of an existentialist's frock from the 1960s connects the handle of a knife with its shadow on the face of Magdalena Montezuma in Elfi Mikesch's film Macumba, 1982. David Marc printed the drawing in 1995 in his book Bonfire of the Humanities with the legend: 'The best minds of Allen Ginsberg's generation were still accusing the radio of hypnotism in 1955.' This lament over self-righteous, intellectual shortcomings could today be resumed with: 'The best minds of Hape Kerkeling's generation will never get the difference between 35mm film and digital video.' A rather 'sh'tty sit'ation!' – but who cares. By nature, practice does not suffer from a need of theory." (From: Schwarze Blöcke, SchwarzHandPresse 2010).

"A U-2 espionage aircraft from the US in the 1950s over Sebaldsbrück ("I'll soon see the bridge") near Bremen: As a child sitting in a train, I thought it was a mechanical principle and not an optical illusion when the arches of the bridge rose and sank shortly behind the ceiling of the station as the train travelled through. The inscription G(CH)IAMULERA, the name of an ice-cream parlour in our small town, is in the field of vision of two eyes. One's gazes may be also jerkily shifted to create the impression of a filmic sequence. The eyelids as the wings of a Maltese cross. On the bottom right, eight flames devouring a human. Opposite, to the left, the depiction of a naked man on the communication circuit board of the Voyager space capsule-with wing feathers on the lower left arm. The story of an easy come, easy go black space. And no one there to tell or to read, and all hearts too small to pump the blood required for a flight." "SUDDENLY: a city. Language as premonition. An exploding cushion over the roof top of a high-rise with the silhouette of a person murdered by the Manson gang in front of its façade. Above it in the sky, lying on its back, an oil-smeared bird and the function of time describing chance. Two transparent T-squares and a bracket, tools of the almighty drawing studio. Adolf Hitler's sketch of a soldier from WWI-the root of evil-with an added umbrella and a left arm stump as a wing. The lasting delivery of insensitivity, the occupation of dreams by very real dead persons, no play of instable combinations of atoms. A circularly spread-out condom from HB (Hanseatic City of Bremen) as an anonymous means of communication: "Love is a burning ring of fire." The game is over, a time that has ended too soon. A clear line that no one thinks about anymore. I know you, but you didn't know me. It slowly dawns on me what's going on with the others." (From: Cinema Scope #46, 2011).

Achim, 1957.
